Since early childhood, Sara Kent has been experimented on--and dominated by--an alien scientist desperate to save his dying race of male clones. She has passed every test, first out of fear, later because her children--the product of asexual genetic splicing--are being held hostage on the alien’s spacecraft. As long as she cooperates, they’re safe, which means she’ll do anything, including engaging in a brief sexual liaison with a random stranger so that the alien can study them.
Unfortunately, Clay Ryerson--the hot guy she picks up in a bar for that purpose--falls madly in love with her and refuses to break up despite her every effort. The more she pushes him away, the more determined he becomes to rescue her from whatever is keeping them apart.
Sara knows from brutal experience that she and the children aren’t the only ones in danger. This alien will kill anyone who gets too close to his precious specimen, including a handsome would-be hero with a death wish.

Amazon has three basic questions to consider when writing a review. They are:Why did you choose this product?
Well, because of Amazon's marketing strategy of personalizing each customer's experience and offering products based on a customer's past purchasing behavior, this book was one of my 'suggestions'. Also, the excerpt sounded promising and the lack of truly negative reviews sealed the deal.
What did you like or dislike about the product? (spoilers ahead)
I liked the potential the story had, but the actuality left me shaking me head. If I am reading a book and practicality intrudes and keeps tapping me on the shoulder to point out how absolutely stupid a plot is...then the book is shot! The author imbued the male character in this story with prevision so that every decision that he made, no matter how stupid, senseless, stalkerish, and idiotic was excusable. Here's an example: Sara meets Clay for a pick up session that lasted three weeks. Clay believes he is in love with Sara (after three weeks with no idea of who she was or having any personal info about her) and of course he's bursting with joy and wants to spend some time with her. She knows she cannot be with him and lies to him, calling his voice mail at his office to break it off with him. Does he take the hint(cause after all...it's just three weeks), no! He tracks her to her apartment where she proceeds to tell him that she is married and it was an affair and she doesn't want him yadda yadda yadda! Does this character, who again should not know have any idea that he is going to end up with this bed partner of only three weeks, do the practical, sensible thing? No. He is bursting with eternal optimism about this relationship and involves his brother (shrink) to perhaps do some counseling/therapy with this woman (whom I reiterate, he's known for a three week sex session, told him she's married and having an affair and doesn't want to be with him). He inadvertently takes her journal in which she has detailed her encounters with the alien so that becomes the foundation on which this ridiculous story is built. Cue in the inquisitive also optimistic brother who just happens to read the journal, and build his own theory on the veracity of its contents down to a tee, despite Sara denying the said contents! Regardless to the fact that Clay was right and Sara was lying, the way his character was written with his illogical behavior and thoughts made it a very trying book to read.
Would you recommend the book?
No I won't, however, reviews are subjective and what I find absurd another person may not.

Perfect Specimen edition by Kate Donovan Romance eBooks Reviews
It was a well written story, but not my favorite story line or characters. Felt a little rushed and jumpy with plot.
Lots of excitement and just the right book if you're feeling sad or depressed. Kate's writing is always fun and upbeat with lots of twists.
Fast paced, and different. Strange, but in a good sci-fi kind of way. Definitely different from the normal science fiction romances. Easy, and quick, for an afternoon or night quick read.
Usually I like longer books, so I hesitated to buy "Perfect Specimen." However, the storyline seemed interesting, so after circling around this book for some time, I finally decided to take the plunge.
Now I wish I hadn't waited so long.
I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters soon won me over, and while the story was fast paced, the plot was well thought out and kept me interested. In fact, I read the entire thing in one sitting, and look forward to reading the sequel.
Although I enjoyed this book, I took one point off the rating because the author doesn't seem to realize that the process of cloning requires an ova, therefore a race of clones who are all male isn't really feasible. It may seem like a small thing, but I like my fantasy to be well-grounded in reality, and if someone is writing about clones, they should at least do a little basic research into the process. I suppose one could argue that an alien race could have more advanced technology, but the process of cloning would still require an ova in which to deposit the DNA, so that part didn't really work for me.
This is a novella, but well worth reading despite the scientific flaw. Kate Donovan is a very competent writer. It's true that this shorter work didn't allow for deep, multidimensional characters, but Donovan used the limited word count to full advantage and still created a believable hero and heroine. She manages to lighten the rather dark subject matter with deft humor and a few not-so-obvious twists. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick but engaging read.
