Sam Winston's "The Mechanic" actually ought to be read before his amazing "What Came After." It gave me better insight into the character that approaches the devastation that is his real life with one directive something like "OK, so how do we fix this?" Inspiration to say the least. The writing is spare. Short sentences. Deep meaning. No messing around with flowery stuff. Winston's prose is as direct as his characters and landscapes. Genetic tampering, corporate greed and human misery. Yet his heroes don't cry or complain. They get to the purpose of surviving, and the reader gets a fast-moving ride into another world. One that may be closer to reality than any of us would like.
The mystery of how Henry Weller and Liz met is solved in this short story. I'd truly been wondering about that aspect of What Came After. In a society so devoid of human interaction how did these two find each other? Now I know and it is a lovely story.
I enjoyed "What came after" and decided to read "The mechanic". After reading, I thought I had only read the sample and went to purchase the complete kindle book. I was surprised to find out that what I read was indeed the full book of a whopping 17 pages. Story is good but 3 stars is based on how little there was of it.
Good story but overpriced for the length. I think I read this in less than an hour. It should be bundled with other short stories.

This book follows the theme from "Silence (Stories from the Days before What came after)" and for those who enjoy the doomsday type yarn, this is a good one. As you read these stories you get the impression that mankind is not that far advanced from the trees when crises occur
